Hello

Darren Whitehouse, SGSA Director of Sport and International Projects

I joined the SGSA in March at what is a very exciting time for the organisation. As it happens, my first day ‘in the job’ was our annual conference. The conference was a perfect opportunity for me to meet some of the key stakeholders in sports safety, and to begin to develop my understanding of some of the key issues that the sector faces.

Before moving into the private sector to work for an international training organisation, I spent eleven years working for the Health and Safety Executive helping other public and private sector organisations to improve safety, which was a fantastic experience.   It’s important to me that the organisation that I work for makes a positive difference to society and I’ve no doubt that the SGSA does just that.

It’s clear, only a few weeks into the role, which the skills and expertise of the SGSA are in demand all over the world. I’m not surprised by this, given our unique experience as a leader for spectator safety in sport.  We have a fantastic opportunity to support our regulatory work by developing partnerships across other countries, sports and major events and my role is to ensure that we do this in a focussed way.

What has impressed me the most about the organisation is how the team manages to balance the hard-work that goes into the regulatory work, the demands from others who value our expertise, whilst still remaining so friendly. I really couldn’t have wished for a nicer group of people to work with and I look forward to meeting as many of our stakeholders as possible over the coming months.
